WHAT IS HEALING TOUCH? Healing Touch is a complementary (or integrative) therapy that is an energy-based approach to health and healing. It was founded by Janet Mentgen, BSN, RN, HNC, CHTP/I in 1989 as a medically-based energy therapy training program for nurses. Over the years, it has demonstrated a positive impact in the health care community. The program is open to health care professionals and all others interested in healing. Healing Touch is a certificate program of, and is endorsed by, the American Holistic Nurses Association. Healing Touch is highly respected and accepted worldwide. Healing Touch uses light touch or hands above the body to influence the human energy system. It specifically affects the energy field (aura) that surrounds the body, and the energy centers (chakras) that control the energy flow from the energy field to the physical body. Non-invasive techniques utilize the hands to clear, energize, and balance the human energy field. Each individual is empowered to participate fully in his or her healing journey. Healing Touch is based on a heart-centered relationship between the practitioner and the client to facilitate the client’s health and healing. The goal in Healing Touch is to restore harmony and balance in the energy system placing the client in a position to self-heal. Healing Touch complements conventional health care and is used in collaboration with other approaches to health and healing or as a stand-alone treatment. A Certified Healing Touch Practitioner (CHTP) has completed 120 hours of standardized curriculum with Certified Healing Touch Instructors. Also completed is a minimum one-year mentorship with a CHTP in which 100 Healing Touch sessions are documented. In addition case studies, ethics, an extensive reading program, and complementary therapies are included in the certification process.
